Exercises:
I realized after the fact that I didn’t really provide that much explanation as to why I chose these exercises specifically. So, I decided that I can just leave the explanation in the comment section here in case you were looking for a more detailed (and less sweaty) explanation.
Squats: Edelgard wants sturdy, powerful legs for a couple reasons. 1, she is running around in heavy armor. 2. swinging a heavy axe around isn’t all about the upper body. A strong lower body (Quads, Hamstrings and Glutes), are incredibly important for Edelgard to fire off both fast and strong axe swings.
Power Cleans: The amount of explosiveness required to perform a clean is applicable for an axe fighter like Edelgard. Power cleans are great because they focus a lot of accelerating extremely quickly, as if Edelgard was swinging as hard as she could without slowing down. Its also great for vertical training as, like a jump, it operates on the sagittal plane. As you may have noticed in-game, she is fond of the classic jumping axe swing. Additionally, power cleans are more “class-specific” for Edelgard because an axe swing can be entirely done on the sagittal plane, too.
Barbell Rows:
While we don’t get the clearest view of Edelgard’s muscles, we can tell that, in her official art at least, she has a very well developed back (save for her upper traps, I guess). I wanted to pick a compound movement like the barbell row, not only because it forces a LOT of muscles to work; however, I wanted to make sure that the tempo, specifically the slow eccentric phase of this exercise, would be conducive to muscle gain.
Medicine Ball Throws: Where the first 3 exercises are on the sagittal plane, the medicine ball throw is on the transverse plane, and is more class specific for Edelgard because she swings her weapon in all directions. Med ball throws are extremely important for her as it trains her to more powerfully swing her weapon from rotating her body. Medicine ball throws are also very important for baseball players for this reason.
Medicine Ball Slams: Similar to the throw, this would be a “class-specific” exercise for Edelgard. This is a vertical force explosive based exercise with powerful full body flexion. I would imagine that the “Spike” combat art would probably become a lot more spikier with this exercise done often.
Farmer’s carry: this exercise is incredibly efficient as it challenges a lot more muscles than one might believe. They are great for core strength as one needs to brace their whole body to help carry the load. Great for muscle building because of the constant muscle tension. And will improve grip strength by painfully burning the forearms.
Seated Hammer Curl: Edelgard has big arms, I want big arms, too. The key to make the most out of this exercise, as well as many other exercises, is just slowing down the pace. By slowing down the eccentric phase to around 4 seconds, the muscle is forced to control the weight coming down, rather than just lifting it up, letting it go, then lifting it back up again. That’s also why I used only 15lbs, I’m getting a ton more out of just using 15lbs in a controlled manner, rather than throwing on a 30lbs and going to town with it.
Banded Pull-ups: Edelgard has big lats, I want big lats, too. Using similar tempo as the bicep curl, I wanted to focus on controlling my bodyweight downwards. Getting help from a resistance band like I did is great for folks wanting to improve their pull-ups without sacrificing the stabilizing aspects of them from an assisted pull-up machine. I used one because I knew my arms and back were wrote off. This last super-set was more for aesthetics than actual combat-specific training.
