About this video: If you want to know how to allow any Minecraft version to join your server, this is the video for you! We show you exactly how to let any version of Minecraft join a Minecraft server. For example, if you have a Minecraft 1.12.2 server, all of the newer versions of Minecraft from 1.13 to 1.15 will be able to join your server without any issues whatsoever. We even show you how to fix the connected texture issue that can appear on older servers like 1.12.2 and 1.8 servers running Via Version with clients in 1.13 or higher. First and foremost, we need to make sure you have a server compatible with ViaVersion. In order for ViaVersion to work on your server, you need at least a Bukkit server. However, we recommend Spigot and Paper in order to get better performance. This is also what most big network servers, who also use ViaVersion, use to host their servers. We have our guide to starting a Paper server linked above.
Once you have a Spigot or Paper server setup, we can download ViaVersion. You can find the ViaVersion download link in the description above. After you land on the ViaVersion plugin page, you will see a blue 'Download Now' button in the top right page. Click on this, and you will download ViaVersion. No need to worry about the version of Minecraft your server is as ViaVersion works on all Minecraft servers from 1.8 to 1.14.4. This means there is no stressing about what plugin version you need.
After you have ViaVersion downloaded, it is very easy to add to your server. All you need to in order to install ViaVersion on your Minecraft server is drag-and-drop it into your server's plugin folder. Then, restart your server. ViaVersion will instantly start working. There is setup process, editing configs, or anything like that to allow people to join your server. It just works right away without any config changes.
However, if you are running a server before version 1.13, you will notice that there is an issue with chests, fences, doors, etc. when playing on 1.13+ clients. This is a bit annoying, but it can be fixed by jumping into the ViaVersion config which can be found in your plugins folder. After opening the config file, search for 'connect-textures', and change this from 'false' to 'true'. Save the file and restart your server. All of the textures will now connect on your server that is running ViaVersion.
