Why No One Should Be a Strong Atheist

Why No One Should Be a Strong Atheist Atheists believe there is no God and theists believe there is a God. However, both atheists and theists can vary in their confidence about their beliefs. In this video, we take a look at the strong atheist (also known as gnostic atheist) position, a view that is 100% confident there is no God.

Christianity Engaged founder, David Erhart, makes the point that unless strong atheists have exhaustively searched for God everywhere or somehow proven God doesn’t exist—which they haven’t—being 100% confident is unreasonable.

The video compares all of the knowledge in the universe—anything and everything that is available to know—with any one person’s knowledge. Scientists estimate that 96% of the universe is composed of dark energy and dark matter. This means that everything we can see here on earth extending to the furthest galaxy in space only makes up about 4% of what is really there. Since scientists have limited knowledge about the 4% of visible matter and even less understanding about the 96% of dark matter and energy, any one person’s knowledge is a fraction of a fraction of everything that is available to know. Thus, without proof of God’s nonexistence, a strong atheist’s 100% confidence level is unreasonable.

The video concludes with a personal testimony from a Christian perspective and answers the question “how can a theist be 100% confident there is a God?”
