As you know, the presence in the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Navy of six ''Stealth'' Varshavyanka-Class submarines of Project 636.3 is still an unshakable factor in providing the Southern Military District with an extensive anti-submarine zone of restriction and prohibition of access and maneuver, covering both the Black Sea region and the large part of the underwater space of the Eastern Mediterranean.
''Stealth'' Varshavyanka-Class submarines of Project 636.3 are equipped with improved MGK-400EM, with MG-519 Arfa also upgraded to MG-519EM. The improved sonar systems have reduced the number of operators needed by sharing the same console via automation.
Anechoic tiles are fitted on casings and fins to absorb the sound waves of active sonar, which results in a reduction and distortion of the return signal.
These tiles also help attenuate sounds that are emitted from the submarine, thus reducing the range at which the sub may be detected by passive sonar.
Sufficiently high efficiency of patrolling by these submarines in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea was demonstrated during the notorious incident that occurred on the night of April 13-14, 2018.
That day, NATO submarines were preparing to enter the line of the launch of strategic cruise missiles UGM-109 "Tomahawk Block IV" on the strategically important infrastructure of Syrian government forces in the provinces of Damascus, Homs, Tartus, and Latakia.
So, according to data published in the British newspaper ''The Times'', as well as on the pages of other foreign military-technical news portals that link to informed sources in the Royal Navy command of Great Britain and Whitehall, on the night of April 13-14, 2018, Russia needed only one ''Stealth'' Varshavyanka-Class submarine of Project 636.3 to successfully block the British HMS “Astute” class submarine at the far approaches to the launch lines of the Tomahawk missiles, located south of Cyprus.
Incredibly, that day ''Stealth'' Varshavyanka-Class submarine of Project 636.3 was managed to insensibly approach the British HMS “Astute” class submarine using the ''creeping'' mode, in this mode, the acoustic noise of the Varshavyanka-Class submarine does not exceed 40-45 decibels.
This technological advantage allowed the Russian submarine, which patrolled the southern approaches to the Aegean Sea, easily to detect and block the British submarine. At the same time, it is obvious that British sonar operators, relying on information from the advanced ''sonar 2076'' intranasal hull based on several thousand hydrophones, were able to record the presence of the Russian submarine on the route only at a distance of 15 to 30 km.
My dear friends, of course, this incident, firstly, destroyed all plans of London to fully implement a joint strike against Syria with the Pentagon, and secondly, confirmed the ability of Russian submarines to stop any attempts to “breakthrough” by NATO’s multi-purpose submarines and U.S. SSGN - ''Ohio'' Class Guided Missile submarines.
