Selena Gomez has found a lot of success lately - her two new songs were an instant hit, she performed live for the first time in two years at last weekend’s American Music Awards, and she got a great partnership with Apple.
But of course, as a woman is on her way up, leave it to a man to try to bring her back down! What’s up guys it’s Emile Ennis Jr here with Clevver News.
The Weeknd has just started teasing new music over the past week. It’ll be his first new release since “My Dear Melancholy,” came out in 2018.
He first started teasing new music in the new standard way that every musician does - he deleted all of the photos on his Instagram.
And then he posted this one, a blurry photo of what looks like a pair of glasses on somebody’s face?
I’m not sure what I’m looking at here but that kind of resembles a nose, right?
He captioned the photo with “the fall starts tomorrow night.”
And to take it a step further, he even changed his profile picture to match.
He even put it on his instagram story as well, along with the caption “tomorrow night we start again”.
So I think it’s officially safe to say that he’s started a new album cycle. The Weeknd posted this photo yesterday, so whatever “fall” he’s talking about starts tonight.
“Fall” like the season? Fall officially started in September, so I don’t know about that. Surely the fan appointed “King of Fall” would know that!
A few hours before his cryptic instagram post, he went on Twitter to ask “when is fall actually over? just curious…”
Tinashe asked in return “does fall exist”, which was the existential question that I did NOT need on this Tuesday afternoon!
But a possible collab between them beside, I still couldn’t figure out what “fall” he’s talking about.
If not “fall” the season, maybe …. The fall of Selena Gomez?
I know, it’s out of the blue. But I have a reason for my theory.
It’s because The Weeknd basically told us straight up that he’s releasing a new song about his relationship with Selena.
He registered a new song, apparently titled “Like Selena” with the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers directory.
Musicians need to register and license any new songs that they plan on releasing with ASCAP - in order for the artists and producers to receive money when the songs are played on the radio or anywhere else.
But sometimes the songs that artists register with ASCAP don’t always keep the same name once they’re released.
And other times they don’t come out at all.
Like, for example, people thought Taylor Swift’s first single off of “Reputation” was going to be called “Timeless” after she registered a song under than name shortly before “Look What You Made Me Do” came out.
Before Harry Styles released his self-titled album in 2017, he registered four songs, called "5378 Miles," "Already Home," "Coco" and “Endlessly,".
So even if the song title doesn’t match the initial name in the ASCAP database, it still gives some detail about what the song is going to be about.
Like, another example is Taylor Swift registering a song called “Had Nothin’ But a Time We Never Had”, which I’m pretty sure just ended up being her collaboration with Sugarland for their song “Babe”.
There’s also rumors that The Weeknd is releasing two songs this week called “Heartless” and “Blinding Lights”.
Apparently, this Mercedes commercial that aired in Germany played a preview of “Blinding Lights”, which some people think will come out on Friday - the 29th.
So now, The Weeknd might not actually be releasing a song called “Like Selena”, but I’m definitely going to be scanning his new music for any references to his ex girlfriend.
They dated way back in 2017, after Selena had broken up with Justin and Abel had ended things with Bella Hadid.
Or maybe it was the other way around, because both Selena and The Weeknd were deep in their feelings for almost the whole relationship.
But still, they had their moments. Like when they were caught making out behind a dumpster, or when they went to the MET Gala together and really couldn’t keep their hands off of each other.
They dated for about 10 months, officially separating in October of 2017.
What do you guys think is going on with The Weeknd? Do you think it’s been long enough where he should just leave Selena alone?
