Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is just around the corner and we’re going to get new flavours of Stormtroopers in that movie, including the Sith Trooper. That made us wonder, what kind of rules and doctrine do Stormtroopers from the Galactic Empire and the First Order have to follow? Turns out, life as a trooper is really tough and we wouldn’t wish such a life on our greatest enemy.
The biggest notion with Stormtroopers is that they have to surrender their identity. They have no names, no faces, no personality. They can’t even think for themselves. If the odds are stacked against them and the order is to keep on pushing, they are to follow that order, even if it means they won’t see the end of the day. They are to keep their armour on at all times, making them faceless cogs in the machine designed to intimidate and spread fear through the planets they take over. Rules are so strict that even adjusting their internal temperatures is forbidden unless they are given an express command to do so.
Some troopers, like the Death Troopers from Rogue One, are given special enhancements, leaving even more of their humanity behind. The troopers of the First Order literally kidnap children and brainwash them from a young age to have them believe in the doctrines of their way, creating fiercely loyal soldiers. Training can also be rough, especially in the First Order, which encourages improvised training as battles are not structured. Many troopers didn’t make it out of training, but the First Order saw this was weeding out the weak as opposed to losing troopers.
