Subscribe to our channel! rupt.ly/subscribe French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner sat in on a cabinet meeting in Berlin on Tuesday, before holding a joint press conference with his German counterpart Horst Seehofer.
Both emphasised the common need for reformed European migration and security policies.
"We need a new system in what regards asylum and migration in Europe because the existing rules are not a sufficient response to the migration pressure that we will surely experience for many more years to come," said Seehofer.
The two interior ministers spoke about migration issues and the need for a new, more efficient asylum process to ensure more security inside European borders.
"We must now refine the mechanism that allows to organise a fair distribution within Europe of people in need of protection. That is what we worked on this morning and what we will continue to exchange on," said Castaner.
The French minister's visit is part of the Aachen Treaty, a Franco-German agreement that pledges deeper economic and defence ties as well as commitment to the EU. Merkel and Macron signed the deal on 22 January 2019 on the anniversary of a similar Franco-German co-operation treaty signed in 1963 by France's Charles de Gaulle and the then German chancellor Konrad Adenauer.
