1. Don’t be afraid to do things that you love doing, even if you don’t feel like it would benefit you in terms of college admissions. If you asked freshman, sophomore, or even junior year me, there’s no way I would have thought fanfiction would help me with the college application process.
2. It’s fine if you do stuff you genuinely like doing, and who knows, you may end up being able to write a really great essay about it too!
3. At the same time, you should also definitely try picking up some activities with college admissions in mind. Like in my case, I initially went into speech/debate to make my application more appealing to colleges, but I stuck with it because I actually liked it as well.
4. Also, colleges would rather have you do only a few extracurricular activities but invest a lot of time in them and be consistent with it than have you do a bunch of different things and spend little time on each activity.
5. Also, besides having good extracurricular activities, you wanna make sure you get pretty solid SAT or ACT score and write great essays since the acceptance rates of top 20 colleges are really low and they're dropping every year.
6. Don’t be afraid to take a small risk with your essays. You can take a risk in not just the essay topic, but also the way you write your essay.
