So JJ Culver is a 6'5 guard who attended Coronado high school, alongside his younger brother Jarrett. The older JJ was the first to graduate, and after making the all district first team in 2016, committed to Wayland Baptist University. A small private school that play in the NAIA conference, where JJ has already played 3 years of college basketball. He averaged around 10 points per game his freshman and sophomore seasons, before taking a step forward as junior last season. When after putting up 17 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists per game. JJ Culver was validated with the SAC player of the year award, as well as making the All NAIA all American first team.
This season though, JJ has taken his game to the next level. After a summer of working out religiously with his younger NBA bound brother. JJ has taken his game to a new level this season, and so far is leading his conference in scoring with 36 points per game. This now brings us up to speed with yesterday's historic performance, wherein Wayland Baptist's 124-60 blowout win, JJ scored 100 points. Becoming the first NAIA player to do so since 1954, for the game, JJ was 34-for-62 from the field, hit 12-of his 33 attempts from 3-point range, and made 20-out of 27 from the free-throw line. On top of that, JJ also added 9 rebounds, 5 steals and 2 blocks. And fittingly 0 assists,
Though this game, much like most high scoring individuals performances. Has received a tonne of backlash, with people questioning why the coach would leave him in the game. And why JJ took almost 4 times as many shots as the rest of his teammate combined, who went 8-15 on the night. Coach's defense was that once he saw his star get rolling early on, he instructed the team to give him the ball until he started missing, which never happened. And that while JJ crept towards triple digits, he didn't want to the coach that denies his player of record-breaking performance. JJ's 100 points came with less than a minute to go in the game when on 98 points, he cut back door and banked his way into the history books.
His younger brother JJ had a crazy reaction on snapchat, and even tweeted out his disbelieve to what just happened, asking for confirmation that he wasn't dreaming. After the game in the locker room, JJ recreated Wilt's iconic photo.
