REBT song. Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy focuses on identifying and disputing irrational beliefs that cause emotional distress. Irrational beliefs often contain demands such as "must" or "should", for example: "I must get perfect grades in school or I am worthless". One technique used in the therapy employs humor and music to help clients see their irrational beliefs from a different perspective. REBT therapists may rewrite a popular or well-known song to include lyrics that exaggerate and poke fun at a client's irrational belief, so the client can sing them in moments of distress and become more aware of their maladaptive beliefs and thought patterns. This song was written for an Intro to Counseling Theories class to demonstrate the technique. The irrational beliefs are from the perspective of a perfectionist college student.
