513 - Thick Ear Infection Discharge Microsuctioned

Ear wax removal is necessary when ear wax build up becomes impacted. Symptoms causes by earwax blockage include: earache (otalgia), conductive hearing loss, blocked ear, vertigo, tinnitus, itchiness and irritation, occlusion etc.

The client attended today reporting right-sided reduced and muffled hearing, aural fullness, and tinnitus. He informed me that he recently suffered from a couple of infections in this ear and was most recently seen by ENT 3 weeks ago, who performed microsuction and advised that he may have a perforation of his tympanic membrane.

Oto-endoscopic examination revealed fully occluding otorrhea in his right external auditory meatus. The left ear was unremarkable with the tympanic membrane intact and healthy. I successfully removed the occluding otorrhea from his right external auditory meatus and also tympanic membrane, which was intact, using endoscopic ear suction. There was, however, visible Otitis Externa present of both his right external auditory meatus and tympanic membrane. Tympanometry deduced bilateral normal Type A tympanograms.

Despite the client’s symptoms being alleviated post-procedure, I have recommended he arrange an appointment with his GP for treatment of his right-sided Otitis Externa, and in the meanwhile, to try EarCalm spray and avoid water entering his ears.
