In a recent interview with The Mac Life, SBG Dublin owner and Conor McGregor coach John Kavanagh said McGregor appears to be running his own camp with staff providing resources, infrastructure and other forms of support help. Is this a good idea? First, it's hard to draw any firm conclusions from afar. Second, the idea of McGregor making a return at welterweight in terms of his focus seems to be well thought out and wise.
On the other hand, this has essentially never been a long-term recipe for success at the elite level. Even if McGregor is no longer at his peak, he should defeat Donald 'Cowboy' Cerrone at UFC 246, but as a long-term play, this arrangement carries significant risk if his aim is to regain UFC world titles at lightweight or in a move to welterweight.
