Uganda has only one national referral mental health facility - Butabika Hospital, which treats an estimated 37,000 in and out patients annually. The different regional referral hospitals have mental health units, which are the first point of call for mental health patients. However, in the districts of the Rwenzori region, an increase in psycho-social problems is hampering service delivery to patients. The rise in mental health problems in places like Kabarole has been attributed to an increase in drug and alcohol abuse among the youth.
