Hamilton is the Only Driver on Senna’s Level
As a former teammate of the 3-time world champion who is often considered by many as the greatest ever - Ayrton Senna - F1 legend Gerhard Berger should know a thing or two about the very best drivers to ever get behind the steering wheel of an F1 car.
He considers Ayrton Senna to be the very best and has revealed that only Hamilton has ever been able to operate at a level on par with the Brazilian great. The primary reason behind his thinking is the near invincibility of Hamilton; with 2016 Champion Nico Rosberg being the only to win a drivers' championship other than Hamilton in the last 6 years. Here’s what Berger had to say:
"Nico Rosberg cost him a championship once, but Rosberg was the only driver who challenged Hamilton.”
"Rosberg left after that season and Hamilton stayed. He's the strongest driver in the field now. Hamilton is unbeatable for everybody. Like it or not, but it's the reality. In the past six years, only Rosberg beat him."
He reaffirmed his belief that Senna and Hamilton are the best drivers he has seen in F1
"He's the only one I've seen in all my years in motorsport who is on Ayrton Senna's level. They're the best I've seen in my career."
Verstappen "Will Make a Great Champion"
When Verstappen made his debut in F1 as a teenager, he raised many eyebrows but his aggressive driving style has earned him many fans. Former Red Bull driver David Coulthard seems to be one of them.
While Verstappen has won a few races, he has been an outsider to the title fight so far in his young F1 career. Coulthard wants that to change in 2020.
"I would love to see Max really challenge for the championship.”
He praised Verstappen for his qualities as a driver and the improvements that he has made that would make him a superb F1 champion.
"He's got speed, he's got commitment, he's got a young devil may care attitude."
"I think he's a breathe of fresh air because he's also very open, very honest and not kind of aloof in standing off so I think he'll make a great champion."
