Mines Advisory Group: CLEARING MINES from Vietnam War @ PLAIN of JARS UNESCO Site {Phonsavan, LAOS} Budget Travel Laos #5
Almost 50 years after the end of the Vietnam War, the trauma and tragedy of a massive bombing campaign in Laos still haunts residents in rural areas.

Tasked with clearing mines from the Vietnam War is the charity, Mines Advisory Group. Given the quantity of UXOs (unexploded ordnances) remaining during an extensive nine-year period when the United States dropped two million tons of bombs during the Secret War in Laos, the work for MAG will continue for years.

Besides the importance of safety for residents, the area around Phonsavan Laos is culturally important. Tourists are attracted to visit because of the Plain of Jars; a UNESCO site with hundreds of large, 2,500-year-old stone jars.

In addition to the Mines Advisory Group, another charity, the Quality of Life Association, assists survivors toward rehabilitation following a UXO accident.

Matt visits these two offices along the main street in Phonsavan to learn about a hidden and darker side of a not-so-forgotten conflict.
