Frank Nelson, an openly gay Toronto school teacher, shares the incredibly emotional story of his battle with drugs in this intimate interview feature story. "Gay and Addicted” explores the complex relationship between bullying, shame issues and addiction, often experienced in much higher rates among the LGBTQ+ population. Growing up gay, Frank experienced intense bullying that scarred him emotionally for many years. To help cope with this childhood trauma, he turned to drugs, becoming a heavy user of drugs such as cocaine and crystal meth. After years of substance abuse and a near fatal experience, Frank took the first steps toward recovery, eventually turning his life around. Now he's married, started a family and helps other gay men have children through the Men Having Babies organization.
