Purpose: The main purpose of this research is to assess the content and acceptability of the utilized multimedia instructional materials in Mathematics 3, and to improve the level of mastery of the grade three pupils
Design/methodology/approach: The study made use of the descriptive-evaluative approach. The LOA results were the basis for the development of the instructional materials. The developed instructional material was presented to the experts and mathematics teachers for their comments and suggestion. After their assessments, the instructional material was found to be acceptable in specific areas such as organization, clarity, navigation, language and presentation and usefulness. All the validation processes were considered by the researchers in developing the final copy/ version of the multi-media instructional material. Finally, the statistical treatment used was frequency, percentile, and weighted mean.
Findings: There was a need for the development of the multi-media instructional materials because of the mathematical performance of the Grade III pupils. The least mastered skills reported in the previous year was the basis for the development of the said instructional material. The developed multi-media instructional materials were interactive, manipulative and collaborative in nature. In terms of acceptability, the multi-media instructional material was acceptable and ready for use. Considering the specific criteria, the developed multi-media instructional material was found to be acceptable in terms of organization, clarity, navigation, language and presentation, and usefulness.
Research limitations/implications: The study was limited to the development and assessment of the acceptability of the multi-media instructional material. The study was not able to cover the effectiveness of the instructional material developed. Accordingly, the said instructional material was not evaluated in terms of its contents and accuracy.
Originality/value: The knowledge construction view of multi-media learning is consistent with the goal of effective multimedia in the classroom to help the pupils develop a genuine understanding of the presented materials rather than simply exposing them and overloading them with vast quantities of information. This multimedia instructional materials can improve the achievement level of Grade 3 pupils and help the teachers become abreast with the advantages of using the said instructional materials.
