Doing PhD? Ask yourself these 5 Questions.
In this video Dr Tahir Yaqub explains why asking yourself these five questions in the beginning of your PhD will help you plan next few years of your life and be successful.
The first question you should ask to yourself is "Why are you doing PhD?". This is important to get clarity in your mind. You might want to get an academic or industry position or you might be doing PhD just to get eligible for immigration as many students do in Australia.
The second question you must ask yourself at the start of your PhD journey is "Where do you see yourself in ten years from now?" The answer to this question will tell you how much commitment is required to get your objective. The answer to the next question will give you an estimate of how much and the next question is "What is your target impact factor?". The impact factor is a number which shows the quality of your research and the way you calculate your target is this. Lets say you want to get a position in a particular university, first try to find out someone who has recently got a job in that university. Now look at his/her impact factor and aim a little higher than that.
The fourth question is "What would you do for not to rely on others?. You should realize that we are alone in this world. Instead of relying on others, you should try to improve your personal attributes such as communication skills, interpersonal skills, positivism etc." you should also learn how to stand out in a crowd, how to become prominent and visible to someone.
The last question number 5 is how would you get focused on above four. This is important that you make a plan for next few years and then identify all the distractions and remove them. You can also use technology such as apps which will stop you wasting time and keep you focused.
