Past Simple is used:
1. For an action in the past with time marker. (The past simple may be used for historical or narrative events.)
a. For single events:
- I saw him yesterday.
- A man went into the forest.
b. For continuous or repeated events, now over.
- Dinosaurs lived on the earth, (but they don’t now.)
- I rode a bicycle when I was young.
- I wrote a ten-page paper last semester.
. c. With once. Sentences using the simple past and once are often ambiguous.
- I rode a bicycle down the pond once.
(I rode it on a single occasion or I rode it often during one period of time. )
2. For past habits
- She went to school at 6:00 before.
- Sambath usually had two boiled eggs for her breakfast.
- He didn’t come here everyday.
3. For things true in the past
- He lived in Trapaing Chhlonh village.
- Mr Borey started doing a master degree of MA in TESOL at IFL but he dropped because of expensive fee.
- She didn’t eat meat.
- They learnt English for five years.
- What did you say? I said I had learned some English before that time.
- When did they arrive?
4. For polite conversation marker, with verbs of thinking, wishing, etc. introducing a request or suggestion. It is often followed by modal verbs in the past form (could/would/might/should/ought to).
- I wondered if you might give me a lift.
(Note: This may refer to a time still in the future.)
