Rain fails to dampen spirits as Rio carnival gets into gear

Rain fails to dampen spirits as Rio carnival gets into gear Rain failed to dampen the party spirit in Rio de Janeiro on Friday (February 21) as carnival festivities officially got underway in the city's Sambadrome.

Every year, hundreds of street bands and millions seeking a good time descend on Rio during the world-famous party and the elaborate parades in Rio's Sambadrome.

Rio's elite samba schools paraded through the specially-built parade area called Sambadrome on Friday in a dazzling display of revelry.

The Sambadrome is the venue for a competition judged on elements such as choreography, atmosphere, organization, and singing.

While the processions are famous for their festive atmosphere, the competition between samba schools is fierce. First place results are bragging rights among Rio's mostly poor communities.

Rio de Janeiro's Carnival officially runs until February 26
