In this video we're going to make a Super Gum with Petrol and Thermocol..!? Thermocol is made of polystyrene, which is a long chain of carbons that has a phenyl (benzene, C6H5) group coming attached to every other carbon (so on carbon 1,3,5 etc.)
Petrol (gasoline) is mixture of hydrocarbons with the formula C(n)H(2n+2).
So when petrol and thermocol mix, no reaction happens. BUT, the thermocol will dissolve in the petrol. Now the characteristics of both the ingredientsare lost and a new product is formed. This product shows the character of neither a solid nor a liquid. It is a translucent material which is brownish or yellowish white in color and with viscosity more than that of a liquid and less than that of a solid. While studying the properties of the material formed, it is found that it looks like glue and can be used as a strong adhesive.
