Climate policies are a 'bit of a stretch' for agriculture industry

Climate policies are a 'bit of a stretch' for agriculture industry National Farmers' Federation CEO Tony Maher says “if we are going to have these targets we need to understand what the implications are”.

Climate change was the focus of the first sitting weeks of Parliament after Labor announced its net zero emissions target by 2050.

Mr Maher told Sky News “we set ourselves a target to grow the industry by an extra $40 billion in the next 12 to 15 years” and “as part of that roadmap, we have in there that the agriculture sector would be trending toward carbon neutrality by 2030”.

“It is an aspirational target but we set it ourselves knowing that we have got to do the research and get the technology and the practices right to achieve it,” he said.

“It is a bit of a stretch for us knowing that agriculture is the contributor of about 13 percent of Australia’s emissions.

“It is a contentious issue, a complex issue and the views in agriculture are wide and varied.”
