Majuli ('Mukha'-The mask tradition)

Majuli ('Mukha'-The mask tradition) 'Mukha' - the mask tradition of Samaguri (Chamaguri) Satra of Majuli, Assam has a prominent place in the field of folklore. From Neo Vaishnavism era Majuli is famous for its own culture specially in Sattria culture introduced by Saint Sankardeva. 'Mukha' was also introduced by Sankardeva and from his time his successors followed this tradition. Sangeet Natak Akademy Award winner Dr. Hemchandra Goswami of Samagauri Sattra (now it is known as Notun Chamaguri Sattra) is a great artisan in this field. 'Mukha Bhaona' is a new concept introduced by Dr Goswami. Assam secured second position in Republic Day parade for this 'Mukha Shilpa' (mask tradition) tableau. Assamese Mukha is preserved in British museum and Saswati Bordoloi represented this 'Mukha Shilpa' for the first time in ICOFLEX 2019 (International conference on folklore) held in Indonesia.
