The setup: Have scope (detached), have rifle, have instructions. Now, nice and easy: calibrate & mount the scope, zero the rifle, then perform a 600 yard challenge. A quick 1-2-3.
If you can do this with a standard internally-adjusting scope, hats off to you!
If you'd like to have a much easier time of it - in fact, likely the easiest time of all - we'd like to offer up the M1000-PRO for your consideration. The latest iteration in the Leatherwood ART (Automatic Ranging Telescope) lineage, this beast is built to last.
To get a bit more granular in what's going on:
1. Look in the manual for your CAM value. It's going to be based off the dope data closest to your current setup. Some specific bullets and setups are listed for easy reference.
2. Set the CAM value on the CAM. This requires a screwdriver and a few moments of time.
3. Attach the scope to the rifle. A few more moments. Really take your time making sure the eye relief is just right, just so your competitors don't get embarrassed.
4. Zero at 200 yards as you would a conventional scope. Make sure the CAM is dialed all the way down to the 200yd position so that you're actually doing what you think you're doing. (Alternatively, simulate a 200 yard zero by firing closer and planning for the difference between the line of sight and the bullet path. Here, we use a 50YD 'close zero.')
5. Win. Shouldn't actually be a step, but there you have it.
This is all possible due to the CAM adjusting for elevation as you range your target. And, conveniently, you range by zooming in or out.
So: Range, Aim, Fire.
For our 600 yard challenge, the steps are simple:
1. Set up targets at (roughly) 200, 300, 400, 500, and 600 yards.
2. Hit all the targets. First round hits would be nice, please.
And you can't use holdovers for elevation; I want those crosshairs on that target!
[Editor's Note: We ranged the targets with a laser rangefinder at the end of the day. It was then that we've discovered the targets were not at the exact distances we had thought. Some were off by as much as 20 yards. The scope worked even when the distances were unknown, so... we're not going to change anything. It's literally built for this kind of situation.
Also, we were going to be using a .308, but the rounds weren't working for the rifle. Instead, we ended up pushing the limits of our little .223s.]
